My Conservation Collection is a recording of nature’s players centered on the Colonial Wading Birds as they fight for survival. Important environmental leaders, President George W Bush, and Governor Jeb Bush supported the rescue effort by the Marion County Legislative Delegation and the Marion County Commissioners. Working passionately to weave a tapestry of protection were Senators Anna Cowin, Nancy Argenziano, Evelyn Lynn, Jim King, Rod Smith, Representatives Dennis Baxley, Joe Pickens, Hugh Gibson, Carey baker, Larry Cretul, Ed Jennings and George Albright III. Everyone contributed to the ecologic rescue. Science proved Colonial Bird Nesting Sites need a “Safe Harbor Zone” around the nesting birds to aid survival. Sheriff Ed Dean and the fine officers and deputies of the Marion County Sheriffs Office, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers, and Department of Environmental Protection officials all joined forces with the Marion County Commissioners to establish and enforce legal standards necessary for the Rookery to recover and flourish. Because the Lake Weir waters are publicly owned, and some of the Colonial Wading Birds migrate from great distances, a mix of Federal, State, and County officials are required to protect these nesting sites. Everyone involved is doing their part to protect and enjoy Mother Natures’ gifts. A special thanks to the Marion County Cultural Alliance, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce and the Sunset Watchers, a local group that meets near the Rookery to enjoy nature and watch the Herons and Egrets. The Sunset Watchers meet near the Rookery to enjoy with the birds, the solar spectacle in Sunset Harbor. |
