President Bush visits Florida

Rookery Bay, Naples Florida

President Bush took time at Rookery Bay to recognize the Marion County Sunset Harbor volunteer efforts to rescue the Great Blue Heron Rookery.

I was thrilled to meet the President and hear his kind words for our Colonial Wading Bird program and the Wildllife Rescue Volunteers of Marion County.

Jeb Bush Saves Rookery

Jeb Saves Rookery

Rescued in 2001 this rookery was down to 4 nesting pairs of Great Blue Herons. Governor Jeb Bush signed the rescue bill introduced by Senator Anna Cowin and Representative Dennis Baxley. Airboats and personal water craft were harassing the wildlife and the wading bird colony was failing. Within 2 years of protection from MCSO, FWC, and DEP, the Colony was fully recovered.
